The story of California real estate developer Brad Shiner and his efforts to reassemble the Great Canvas of 19th-century French painter Adolphe Marchand. An alcoholic tortured by his memories of fighting in Napoleon's army, Marchand depicted all of history as a single, monumental battle, but was displeased with his creation and cut it into small pieces, which he sold off one by one to buy wine. As Shiner, himself a strange and troubled soul, begins to track down and collect the pieces, the narrative shifts among Napoleonic France, 1990s California, and many times and places in between, following the paths of these bizarre and possibly cursed artistic abortions. By turns humorous and horrifying, realistic and fantastical, mundane and metaphysical, this novel echoes Pynchon, Borges, and Philip K. Dick in its themes of obsession, paranoia, fetishism, time, and death.

"The Painted Sun" is trippy, hilarious, incredibly strange, and very well written. Above all, the language is alive--Maccannell has a special flair for pungent observation--and it carries you through this epic journey into madness. At its center is the mystery surrounding Adolph Marchand's massive canvas upon which he has smeared his drunken, battle addled view of world history. Over time the painting is sliced into smaller pieces and scattered across the globe creating a gigantic puzzle for the interested collector, historian, and other mystery chasing lunatics to solve. The pieces are put together in enjoyably unexpected ways as the story skips around in time, traveling to Napoleonic France, The California Gold Rush, and 1990's Northern California. When real estate developer Brad Shiner stumbles across a few of these works in the 90's he becomes obsessed with Marchand's work, perhaps even possessed by it. There's an insinuation that the painting itself is not only cursed, but holds an alchemical secret. The curse, combined with an existential freakout Shiner was probably in for anyway, throws him into an adventure where he encounters other people whose lives have similarly been sucked into the psychic whirlpool created by Marchand's dubious masterpiece. A society of freaks and fools play out their roles, and in my favorite section of the book its realist, absurd, and supernatural elements are fully twisted together when Shiner is literally haunted by the ghosts of the past. There's also a particular magic in the depiction of Northern California, which in this novel is practically a character all its own, and it's given both loving and satirical attention.Product details

Solid Read! Impressed to find out this was his first novel...looking forward to future works. I quite enyoyed curling up this past winter reading it!
This is a fantastic book! It is exciting and entertaining and I could not put it down. At this price, it's a steal. You won't regret it!
Jason MacCannell's writing is top notch. His ability to suck you in and make you feel like you're part of the story is a rare art. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I hope to see more work from this author! My only criticism is that the book is too short!
